What is socialization? Socialization is the lifelong process by which people learn the ways of the society in which they live.The process by which humans acquire a sense of self or a social identity, develop their human capacities, learn culture, and learn about the expected behaviors. 3. What is culture? (What are the two main forms of culture? ) Sociologically, culture is the way of life of a people. The two main forms of culture are material culture ( all the physical objects that people have invented or borrowed from other cultures) and nonmaterial culture ( the intangible human creations that include beliefs, values, norms, and symbols). . What is social structure? Social structure is a system that coordinates human activities in broadly predictable ways, shaping relationships and opportunities to connect to others, gives people an identity, puts up barriers to accessing resources and people, and determines the relative ease or difficulty with which those barriers can be broken. 5. What is identity and how do culture and social structure construct identity and socialize new members in terms of these images?The way we live and the people we socialize on a daily basis made a difference on how we identify ourselves. Cultures gives us ideas of what is acceptable and what material objects we have to play, work, and develop. There are 92 Metopes on the Parthenon building, which relate to four different myths.The Parthenon itself is a Temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena built on the Acropolis in Athens. Metope XXXI found on the southern side of the Parthenon believed to depict the Centauromachy the mythical battle between Centaurs and Lapiths. The mythical Lapith king invited the Centaurs to his wedding. Where the Centaurs got drunk and tried to abduct the bride as well as the other Lapith women. The Lapiths fo ught off the Centaurs and were victorious. It did not hold the most sacred image of Athena, which was a statue made of olivewood, which was within the Athena Polias Temple. The political message conveyed by the subject matter of metope XXXI and the Parthenon, as a whole was one of superiority over their barbarous enemies. It portrayed barbarians non Athenians/Greeks as not having any morals, self-restraint or the ability to have reasoned rational thoughts or discussions. The housing of the treasury of the Delian League within the Parthenon cannot be ignored either, It made it into a civic as well as religious building. Answer with references to at least two of the following: the art and architecture of the Acropolis, the Ephitaphios Logos, Persians and Lysistrata Propaganda is a subjective term so for the purposes of this essay I will be using the definition provided by the (OCC, p573. ) Using Persians, Art and architecture of the Acropolis, the Ephitaphios Logos and Aristophanes Lysistrata to explore the different forms propaganda takes and whether it makes a text or piece of architecture more about propaganda than any other purpose it may serve.Before discussing these texts and architecture, it is worth noting that Pericles is closely connected to the first three items under discussion. Although Strategos at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian war he died within approx in the first two and a half years of the outbreak in429 BCE. Pericles a democratic aristocrat born in 495BCE was very successful. He was the (choregos) Chorus leader responsible for the training and paying of the festival chorus for Aeschylus’ Persians in 472BCE; he initiated the building program on the Acropolis in the 440s-430s BCE and gave the first Ephitaphios Logos of the Peloponnesian war.He was elected general (Strategos) for 29 years consecutively uncontested (OCC, p527) although democracy had been around for 50 years Pericles was the one who championed it that as well as Athenian imperialism. His peers held him in high regard. (Bhag, p145) Aeschylus’ Persians financed by Pericles is an excellent example of Integration propaganda it sought to reinforce the nature of the barbarian. This is the first instance of people being represented on a temple decoration. This could be argued that it is defiantly more about civic pride than piety. The building program, which Pericles instigated also, included the Erecthion, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike (victory) they were t o show that Athens had recovered from the Persian attack on the Acropolis in 480 BCE.The whole program was funded by money from the Delian league (Block 2, Part 2) In The Ephitaphios Logos, a version of Pericles speech by Thucydides at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian war, he presents a very nationalistic view of Athens and of the Athenians themselves he starts out by praising the ancestors for handing down the country free and makes it clear that they did this with valour. When he states in (Reading’s book â€Å"2. 37) that, their constitution does not copy others but that others are more likely to copy it.He is saying we are the best. The speech goes on to expound the virtues of Athenian democracy and way of life and in doing so he manages to contrast it with that of life and rule in the undemocratic Greek states and non Greek lands. He seeks to instil national pride and remind the citizens of their civic duties to the state as well to fellow Athenians. As wh en a country is at war, patriotism is very important and how better to remind them of their greatness and accomplishments.It was propaganda to reinforce Athenian pride in their state and to demonize the enemy by contrasting it yet again against the mighty and great Athens. (Block 2, Part 3) , Aritophanes’Lysistrata written and performed in the twentieth year of the Peloponnesian War 411BCE was written at a time when the war was not going well for Athens they had suffered heavy losses. Things were not going to get any better for them. Political satirist Aristophanes takes the universal and â€Å"turns it upon its head†. He uses a world where mere women can outwit the men.To end a war that everybody was sick of apart from the government who had the funds to keep it going. Using all the satirist tricks of comedy, farce, parody, and a comic fool he manages to convey that the war has gone on long enough and even offers solutions with the analogy of women’s work (Lysi strata 575-587). Combining this with a good mix of the bawdy, song and dance he connects with his audience who know what the political position is at the time. In direct contrast to the above pro Athenian propaganda of Pericles’ achievements, Aristophanes Lysistrata is anti-war/Athenian propaganda. Block 2, Part Four) In conclusion, I find it hard it difficult to agree or disagree that any of the propaganda presented was the primary function of either the plays or architecture of the Acropolis. A dissertation basically refers to a treatise that is stating a certain academic position; it is a lengthy study backed by intensive research with an aim of making a vital contribution to a specific field of study or topic. The key to writing an excellent dissertation lies in conducting an extensive and rigorous research. There are a number of requirements that have to be put into consideration if a research project is to be successful. A research project is meant to contribute to an existing body of knowledge and not in any way be applied for any individual’s self-enlightment. It should not be conducted for the sole purpose of comparing data or show the existing differences or relationship between any two set pf data Finally the question; to be tackled should not be limited to either yes or no answers. A yes or no answer will not contribute to the studies as per the core of the dissertation. The knowledge gathered in research project should be geared towards providing important insights about the topic or the research problem (S. Joseph l. 2007) I have a lot of interest in health studies and have in the past engaged in a lot of research on the various aspects and problems affecting the human body and the solutions to such problems. The past researches have seen me contribute to the existing body of knowledge and were in no way meant for self-enlightment. The nature of the research problem: â€Å"Evaluation and management of patient with cardio-Pulmonary diseases† is itself an indicator that the solutions will not be found by comparing any set of data or show any inter-relationships or differences existing between that data. The research aims at looking at the ways to provide effective management of cardio- pulmonary diseases in an effort to fill any existing gaps. Many researches have been conducted but have not been comprehensive and may have left certain gaps. This will be the sole drive of this dissertation. Question 3 Cardiopulmonary disease refers to diseases that inhibit the function-ability of the heart and the lungs. These diseases can have a long time impact on a person physical and mental well standing. Randie A, et al, 1999). A large proportion of the population continues to search for ways to enable them cope with heart ailments and complications. These complications are among the most of the highest killers. Many more are at a higher risk of getting cardio-pulmonary diseases as time passes by, especially as they advance in age. Management of these ailments involves astronomical costs raging from hospitalization and medical costs. The government, individuals, and the employees feel these costs. This cost is in terms of the direct costs in addition to disability expenses. (www. cardiumhealth. com) A lot of research has been conducted in this aspect. This research seeks to explore further this topic. It will focus at filling the gaps that have been left by the prior researchers. Management of many health complications and issues need to be not only cost efficient but also meant to endure that hope and effective care is given to the patients. It should be geared towards ensuring that the patients are healthy and remain productive. Hence the research problem would aim at looking at ways through which management of patients with cardiopulmonary disease can be done cost effectively. It aims to provide more information towards how this can be achieved as well as evaluating the existing patient management methods and (criteria) and how they can be improved to meet this objective. Questions 2 The problem statement for the dissertation topic is:† Ensuring cost effective evaluation and management of patients with cardiopulmonary diseases. Cost effectiveness refers to provision of certain services or goods with the minimum possible costs. It is not meant rather to compromise the quality of those services. Management of any disease is a costly affair and takes toll on those all involved. There are many ways through which these diseases can be managed but they involve high costs that are increasingly becoming hard to meet as the ailments become more prevalent in the population. The nature of care and health needs for an individual patient would vary depending on the level of recovery. Some may be acute while others are outpatient. Specific demands of the individuals would mean specific cost levels (NYU Medical Centre, 2007). The costs would vary from nursing, therapy, counseling alongside many others. Management of cardiopulmonary disease would involve coming up with ways through which the patients would access self-care, proper medication, and information on proper nutrition and a healthier lifestyle (www. vnsny. org). A research conducted in this line would provide vital information on how the above activities would be provided cost effectively. It would be able to address more on a topic that has overtime been widely tackled but has failed to provide a definite solution, not just in heart and lungs complications but also on other health complications as many revolve around the same key issues. Again this research recognizes the need of quality care and hence will not seek at reaching a method that compromises the quality of health care to reduce on costs. If properly conducted it will provide answers and save on costs associated with management of these diseases. The reviewed research problem statement for the dissertation would be: â€Å"Ways for coming up with cost effective ways of evaluating and managing patients with cardio-pulmonary diseases. † The initial problem statement is not grammatically correct and could not make a lot of sense on its own. The statement starts with a continuous verb- â€Å"ensuring†, this is not understandable at a first glance. The statement as it stands does not offer a reader enough clues as to what the research is going to focus on, it is not clear what is the appropriate link between cost effectiveness and cardio-pulmonary diseases. A good research statement should be able to provide a sense of inter-relationship between the problem and the dissertation topic. It fails also to provide a limit or the point of focus that the research is to take. A research problem statement should provide a clear guidance on the content of the research or the study. It should have clear demarcated limits of the research. It should provide a specific scope to guide the research on what is to be tackled and what is to be left out. The initial problem statement is too general and is confusing to a reader. A researcher might be misguided to focus on the different ways of managing patients with cardio-pulmonary diseases and fail to come up with the best cost effective methods for these diseases management. A good statement hence should be one that points out clearly what is expected of the research in a manner that is devoid of any ambiguities. It should be all comprehensive and not meant to confuse the reader on what specifically it is aiming to investigate by giving a general idea of the objective and the purpose of the study. The edited version of the research answer will provide the solutions the study is looking for. Looking at it will give a clear and informative idea of what the paper will entail, it gives a limit and the scope, which the researcher will follow. It will limit the researcher to the best and the most cost effective way of evaluating and managing cardiopulmonary diseases with no room for irrelevancy (web. mit. edu) The way the statement has been framed ensures that the researcher comes with the necessary answers to the arising questions. It has no room for a yes or no answer or any need to make comparisons. The solutions will be elaborative and seeking to give the specific methods for cost efficiency. In tackling this research problem, the researcher will have to conduct intense research, gathering of data and relevant information. It will include the use of case studies, questionnaires, and interviews among other data collection strategies. The researcher will have to interview experts in the health field as well as the patients to get a grasp of the situation at hand. This will take time. It will also require a high allocation of financial resources to cater for all those requirements. A critical analysis of this research problem leaves no doubt in my mind that this is exactly what I would wish to investigate. I wish to scrutinize the ways that can be used to bring cost efficiency in patient’s management. For further analysis of the appropriateness of the research problem, I showed it to my colleagues in class for their review. Opinion was that the research problem statement requires more revision to ensure that it captures all aspects of the existing research problem and what the research seeks to tackle.  The revised problem statement would be: â€Å"What would it take to ensure cost efficiency in evaluation and management of patients with cardiopulmonary diseases? † Developing the dissertation topic or title is one of the most laborious tasks. List of research topics should be made in the bid to evaluate and choose the best and the most striking title. (www. unc. edu). An evaluation of the above checklist will provide a useful insight for arriving and developing the best dissertation topic. In choosing dissertation topic, it is imperative that one analyses what he/she is best at. It would be a plus to research a topic that you are well versed with its major concepts and that you have a lot of interest in to avoid generalization (www. c. s. purdue. edu). The fact that a research is not conducted for a persons own self interest does not mean that one should not pick a topic that he/she has interest in, what it means is that the researcher should not use that opportunity to satisfy his personal curiosities but rather should aim at researching for knowledge’s sake. In selecting this dissertation topic it is important that I ensure that the topic I have chosen is appropriate to my studies, it should be appropriate to the subject at hand. The topic should not be very wide as not to be manageable due to the possible time constraints. I will also have to put into consideration my instructors interest, it should be a topic that they will approve of and something they believe is within my scope of studies (www. disertation-writing. net). It is advisable to incorporate my peers view on the appropriateness of my topic, through their review I can get important tips to apply when selecting that topic. The importance of originality should be underscored, this makes the topic should have a sense of novelty and be interesting to the researcher as well as the reader as it seeks to unearth discoveries that have not been there before. The topic should be created and not stumble upon or found in the library books (Dr. Sally Jensen, 2000). These tips as well the above-learnt checklists should assist me to come up with an appropriate topic for my dissertation.

The University believes that this will give us more understanding of classroom literacies and and linguistic diversity in our country. I chose Sepedi as it The purpose of having classroom literacy is to empower students to become literate in a specific language and thereafter to be able to express themselves in a professional manner in terms of that language and the subject they choose to teach using that language. It serves no purpose to have students learn a specific subject in a language, say Afrikaans that they are not familiar with and perhaps even have no desire to learn, and then have to teach it in English or Sepedi. The reason therefore that Learning Institutions, such as accredited Universities like TUKS, offer Mother Tongue courses is precisely to counter this problem. One of the main purposes would be Empowerment which would seem to be the catalyst in the drive to educate students in their preferred language. Another main purpose would be to break down the barrier that was created, albeit (too old fashioned) invisibly, between the Western and the African culture. Once this is achieved there could be harmony in the cultural d iversities that exist. There is a huge linguistic diversity within all Educational Institutions in South Africa. South Africa is one of the exceptionally few countries in the world that has eleven official languages recorded in its Constitution. There are a handful of educational facilities that have been privatized and as part of their specific curriculum, that only offer one standard language being English, as the preferred language. This type of institution would commonly offer one or two African languages as an optional language but in addition have three or four European languages such as German, Spanish, Italian and French as second and third languages. Public schools, by virtue of the volume of students with an African mother tongue and or the financial capability, or lack thereof, of the parents or guardians mainly offer English as the preferred language, and one to three of the ten remaining official languages as second and third language options. Students opting for an African language as their p referred language of learning and subsequent teaching would however need to clearly understand that they would, by virtue of their choice, be limited in terms of expanding their horizons outside the boundaries of South Africa. Educators should never force students to learn a specific language because they personally either cannot speak it, like it or perhaps even are not able to teach that specific language. Having a second or third language can only be beneficial to those that can and will make use of this ability. I would see the benefit of having one or more additional language modules in African languages only for those students that have the desire to further their education in their desired field, or become teachers where they would be able to utilize what they have learnt pertaining specifically to the language they have chosen. Having said that, it is always beneficial to learn or have learnt any additional language. An implication of this would be that the student, who will ultimately be the teacher, will have to learn, and master, that specific language before they would be able to teach any learners or prospective students correctly. It serves no purpose to learn a language in a mediocre fashion and then attempt to teach learners in that mediocre fashion. The result would be catastrophic. So dramatic? In my personal opinion I feel that there are too many African language options available and then, by contrast, not enough foreign ones available as choices or options for students. This would be particularly applicable to students that have a desire to expand their education in a foreign country where the language barrier could be the deciding factor when it comes to an application for a position. It is always a prerequisite that any prospective candidate for a position in a foreign country is literate in that specific language or at least can show that they are learning or have an interest in the language. I also understand that there is a huge financial burden on Educational Institutions to have the infrastructure to be able to provide all these languages to their students. Software development is very expensive and takes a lot of time to develop and perfect. In addition to all the infrastructure and resources needed to offer all these languages, the Educational Institution would also have to employ additional mother tongue speaking and educated staff to teach these languages at a cost. The cost would have to be weighed up against the time spent by each educator and compared to the number of students per class to see if this would be a viable option. The chance that such classes would be, could be or could even become viable, is highly unlikely and therefore would become a financial burden for the Institution. I am also of the opinion that no Educational Institution should or should have to offer language modules in all eleven languages. The reason for this is twofold; one, that many of the African languages are very similar and could effectively be integrated into other languages and therefore do not warrant the vast expense of development and two, that the minority languages have so few students that it also does not make financial sense to do this.
